The NCIHC Membership Committee is pleased to announce a call for presentation proposals for our Second Annual Membership Meeting in Atlanta, GA, on June 5 and 6, 2008. All NCIHC members are welcome to submit proposals.

The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care is a multidisciplinary organization based in the United States whose mission is to promote culturally competent professional health care interpreting as a means to support equal access to health care for individuals with limited English proficiency.
About NCIHC Members
The NCIHC is a multidisciplinary organization with member representation in all 50 states as well as several other parts of the world (including Japan, the Netherlands and Latin America). NCIHC members include full-time, freelance and dual role interpreters; health care organization staff; language agency employees; interpreter trainers; policy makers; and consultants in the field. The NICHC has over 300 members.
About the 2nd Annual NCIHC Membership Meeting
During our annual meeting, NCIHC members have the opportunity to gather and discuss issues related to the provision of quality interpreting services in healthcare. Unlike traditional conferences, NCIHC holds open forum discussions led by experienced moderators. The data collected during these dynamic sessions is used toward the development of NCIHC publications, presentations and additional research.

We invite creative, innovative and thought-provoking proposals from NCIHC members in the following categories:
A. Eight FIVE-minute presentations
B. Three FIFTEEN-minute presentations
C. A “Hot Debate” Session
D. Poster sessions
E. Work group facilitators
F. Specialty group facilitators
A. FIVE-minute presentations
Topics (please choose one):
(a) innovations from across the country or around the world;
(b) what the field will look like in ten years.
These eight presentations are scheduled for the morning of
June 5th.
• Each session will be strictly timed. Questions will be held until the end, when they will be taken from the audience for 20 minutes after the eight presentations are completed.
• Props are permitted and encouraged; however, due to time constraints, no electronic media are permitted.
• Humor, within the limits of reason and taste, is warmly encouraged provided that a point of substance is addressed.
• Handouts of one to two pages will be permitted if the presenter (or presentation team) duplicates and brings the handouts to the session. (We recommend 150 copies.)

B. Three 15-minute presentations
Topic: new studies or promising/best practices
These three sessions are scheduled for the afternoon of June 5th.
• Each session will be strictly timed. Questions will be held until the end: they will be taken from the audience for 15 minutes after the three presentations are completed.
• The presenter may use any electronic media or format with the exception of PowerPoint slides or comparable formats. For example, video/DVD vignettes or audio files played over a computer would be permitted, but presentations on overhead projectors would not.
• Humor, within the limits of reason and taste, is again warmly encouraged provided that a point of substance is addressed.
• A team may choose to present one topic, either concurrently or consecutively (e.g., three presenters of five minutes each).
• We encourage creativity, dynamism and conviction. Inspire your audience.
• Handouts of one to two pages will be permitted if the presenter or presentation team duplicates and brings the handouts to the session. (We recommend 150 copies)
C. A“hot debate” session.
Topic: a controversial but vital topic in healthcare interpreting.
This one-hour session is scheduled for the afternoon of
June 5th.
The proposal should include the following:
• A debate team composed of any number from one to four persons on each side.
• An engaging facilitator.
• An interesting angle.
• Creativity, zest and a willingness to arouse (and manage) strong feelings in the audience.
• Ideas to get the audience involved and to participate periodically during the debate.
This is a live debate. Make it hot! Create two panels with truly dynamic debaters who can work up a sweat and a lather. Involve the audience in creative ways. Humor is acceptable, but the topic must be serious and relevant to the future of the profession.
Again, no PowerPoint is permitted. Although no handouts are required, they are permitted if a handout might help the audience to grasp a certain set of points or background information relevant to the debate. (We recommend 150 copies.)
D. Poster sessions
Topics:
(a) Innovative healthcare interpreting programs from the U.S. or around the world;
(b) Success stories in finding money and resources to support quality healthcare interpreting programs.
Poster sessions will be accessible before and after the main events and at coffee breaks on June 5 and 6, and also during lunch on June 5.
• Your poster should combines text and graphics to make a visually-pleasing presentation.
• The poster should tell WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, HOW, WHY as well as SO WHAT? and NOW WHAT? You should be able to "answer" each of these questions in a sentence or two.
• Handouts (a reproduction of the text, graphs or a summary of the work) are encouraged (we recommend 150 copies).
• NCIHC will provide only one 8-foot table for poster displays. All other supplies must be supplied by the presenter.
E. Five facilitators for work groups
This one-hour session is scheduled for the afternoon of
June 5th.
• We are seeking five facilitators to lead work groups that will examine raw data in the form of written comments/recommendations from our two NCIHC membership surveys of 2007 and 2008 to each group.
• With the assistance of a scribe, each workgroup will be responsible for drafting/creating a document that summarizes current challenges in the field together with ideas for solutions.
• The facilitator may, if he or she chooses, have each group divide into smaller working groups of about 4 to 5 people during a portion of this time to facilitate more concentrated work.
If you submit the form to be a facilitator, you do not need to submit an abstract or a program title. We will contact you to provide you with further information about your work group program and agenda.
F. Five specialty group facilitators
This one hour session is scheduled for the morning of June 6th
• We are seeking facilitators willing to lead circles of their professional peers. For example, an interpreter trainer might lead a group of trainers, an interpreter services coordinator might lead a group of people who work for hospital services and language companies, while a researcher might lead a team of fellow academics.
• The intent of these work groups will be to examine products from the previous day’s work sessions and come up with concrete recommendations to guide the future of the Council’s work in specific areas for the next five years.
• During this time, each group of professional peers may hold open debates and discussion about the documents or topics the day before. A scribe will be present to record this event. Everything is recorded with a goal to creating the priorities that group believes the NCIHC should pursue in the upcoming five years.
• The facilitator’s responsibility is to ensure that key points are pointed out and that the discussion continues for the entire hour. Facilitators should offer their group two or three guiding questions, such as: [for an interpreter service coordinators’ group]: What can NCIHC do to better support us? What tools would help us build our programs? [for a trainers’ group]: How can we, as trainers, best help the Council to support quality training?
If you submit the form to be a facilitator, you do not need to submit an abstract or a program title. We will contact you to provide you with further information about your work group program and agenda.
