Andri Matos for NCIHC Director 2025
ANDRI MATOS
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

I am nominating myself for a position on the NCIHC Board because I am deeply passionate about health equity, particularly through the lens of language access in healthcare. With over a decade of experience as an interpreter, I have been privileged to witness firsthand the critical role that interpreters play in bridging communication gaps for limited English proficient (LEP) individuals, ensuring that their voices are heard and understood in essential healthcare and legal settings. I hold a medical degree and have also worked as a healthcare educator, teaching pharmacology and related topics to allied health students. This experience has further fueled my commitment to improving healthcare delivery by enhancing communication between healthcare providers and LEP patients. My work as an educator has strengthened my ability to communicate complex information effectively to diverse audiences, a skill that I believe is key to the work of the NCIHC.In addition to my work as an interpreter and educator, I am a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and a member of the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES). Through these certifications, I have gained valuable insights into public health, particularly around the prevention and management of chronic conditions in underrepresented communities. I have focused much of my efforts on creating partnerships and programs aimed at improving healthcare access for the Latino community, who often face significant language barriers. I am running for this position because I believe that the NCIHC plays a vital role in advocating for equitable healthcare access through improved language services. Serving on the board would allow me to contribute to the organization’s ongoing efforts to promote quality interpretation services and raise awareness about the importance of culturally and linguistically appropriate care. I am especially excited about the opportunity to support initiatives that address health disparities and advocate for policies that ensure language access is a fundamental part of the healthcare system. My goal is to bring my clinical, educational, and public health expertise to the NCIHC Board, while also drawing on my personal commitment to health equity. I believe that by working together, we can continue to strengthen the role of interpreters in healthcare and ensure that all patients, regardless of language, receive the care and respect they deserve.
