Running for President of the NCIHC Board of Directors
Dear Esteemed Members of the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare,
I am honored to announce my candidacy for the position of President of the Board of Directors of the NCIHC. With a background as a Portuguese court and healthcare interpreter, a seasoned trainer of trainers in language access for healthcare and human services, and an adjunct professor of healthcare interpreting at Highline College in Washington, I bring a wealth of experience and dedication to the field. My journey in language access began as a Spanish & Portuguese medical interpreter at Rhode Island Hospital, associated with Brown University’s Medical School. Over the years, I have held key roles, including supervising translators in legal and financial settings in New York and serving as the Trainer-Supervisor at Harborview Medical Center’s Department of Interpreter Services in Seattle. Educationally, I hold two M.A.s from Brown University in Bilingual Education and Portuguese & Brazilian Studies, demonstrating my commitment to excellence and proficiency in the languages crucial to our work. Nationally certified by CCHI as a CoreCHI-P, Portuguese healthcare interpreter, and a Washington State DSHS authorized medical interpreter, I am also a Certified Trainer of Trainers (ToT) of medical interpreters. Currently directing Lobo Language Access in Tacoma, Washington, I provide crucial consultation on language access, develop interpreter training curricula for Washington’s DSHS, and conduct training webinars on interpreter skills. My service to the NCIHC includes a role as a Board member and as Chair of the Standards & Training Committee since 2020. Additionally, I have contributed significantly as a member and voice host of the “Home for Trainers” webinar group since 2013, facilitating over 60 national webinars on effective medical interpreter training. Having served as a CCHI Commissioner from 2015-2021, I understand the importance of setting and upholding high standards in our profession. If elected as President of the NCIHC Board of Directors, I am committed to fostering collaboration, advancing training standards, and advocating for the interests of language access professionals nationwide. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute my skills, passion, and experience to lead the NCIHC towards continued excellence and innovation.
