I am excited to submit my candidacy for a position on the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Board. With extensive experience running a global language service provider (LSP) and a deep commitment to enhancing health literacy, I believe I can bring valuable insights and expertise to the board. As the founder and CEO of Lingua Serve, I have dedicated my career to providing high-quality interpretation services across various sectors, including healthcare. My work has allowed me to witness firsthand the critical role that effective communication plays in patient safety and care quality, as well as how language barriers can lead to misunderstandings, misdiagnoses, and adverse events, particularly among vulnerable populations. This experience has fueled my passion for advocating for culturally competent care and improving health literacy. In addition to my professional experience, I hold an MBA and am currently a Juris Doctor (JD) candidate focusing on health law and policy. This academic background complements my practical experience by providing me with a robust understanding of the legal and business frameworks that govern healthcare delivery. My education has equipped me with the analytical skills necessary to navigate complex regulatory environments and advocate for policies that promote cultural competence in healthcare settings.
A key focus of my work has been addressing the disparities in quality among remote offshore interpreters globally. I am committed to closing this gap by providing interpreters with opportunities for certification and professional development, enabling them to participate fully in our industry. The demand for language services is growing, yet access to quality training and certification remains inconsistent across regions. By advocating for standardized certification processes similar to those offered by organizations like NAATI and NBCMI, we can ensure that interpreters worldwide meet high professional standards. This initiative not only enhances interpreter quality but also promotes equitable access to language services globally. Furthermore, as a board member of the Language Connect Foundation, I actively contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting language learning and supporting second language programs in U.S. education. This role has further deepened my commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to quality education and resources, which is essential for effective communication in healthcare. I am running for this board position because I believe in NCIHC's mission: to improve access to quality healthcare through effective communication. If elected, I will focus on advocating for cultural competence training among healthcare providers, enhancing national standards for interpreters, building partnerships with organizations that share our vision of improving health literacy, and promoting the integration of technology in language services to enhance interpreter effectiveness and patient engagement. My commitment to improving health literacy through effective communication aligns with NCIHC's goals. I am eager to bring my experience, vision, and passion for this cause to the board. Together, we can make strides toward a more inclusive healthcare system where every patient receives the care they deserve.
