SCOTT SUCKOW
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

I am applying to serve on the NCIHC Board of Directors because I am passionate about “making healthcare work” for patients facing language and cultural barriers. In my 6 years working in language access, I have seen a good deal of progress within my health system, and in other systems across the country … but I also know we have much farther to go! Leaders in the language access community today face daunting challenges, ranging from staff shortages to compliance concerns, cost control, and the rapid evolution of technology. At my health system, we have adopted unconventional-but-effective solutions to many of these challenges, including interpreter scheduling, clinical documentation, and staff compliance. We have taken innovative approaches to interpreter recruiting, professional development, and quality. In addition, we lead unique Cultural Navigation programs that support LEP patients in the community and are conducting two pilot programs on AVS translation. We are active in several industry working groups, including one that I lead, which is focused on the challenges of operating video interpretation call centers. My background as a healthcare administrator and support services leader has been useful in driving change and progress in an environment that is complex, bureaucratic and cost-focused. As a result, we have been able to triple the size of our interpreter teams, add LOTS of interpreters in 8 languages, build an ASL team, and stand-up a video interpretation call center. Despite these advancements, we have much further to go. Throughout my career I have taken leadership roles in professional and volunteer organizations – most recently as President of the American College of Healthcare Executives’ Rocky Mountains Chapter. In that role, I led a rebranding campaign, digital marketing launch, and restructuring of the chapter’s sponsorship and mentorship programs. These efforts improved outreach to members and participation in chapter events. From my work on other boards and committees, I am keenly aware of the need for talented and committed volunteers in professional organizations like NCIHC. If elected to the NICHC Board, I would serve as an active and engaged member of the leadership team. I would work to strengthen NCIHC’s ability to promote language access and support language professionals throughout the country. I look forward to the opportunity!
