YULIYA SPEROFF Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors
I am honored to submit my nomination for the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Board of Directors. As a certified Russian-English CoreCHI-P™ and Washington State DSHS medical and social services interpreter with extensive experience, I am dedicated to advancing quality standards in healthcare interpreting and contributing to a more equitable and accessible healthcare system. In my current role as the Medical Interpreter Supervisor at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, I have the privilege of supporting a diverse team of interpreters, as well as managing translation projects, bilingual staff assessment and education for staff/providers. This role, as well as my previous experience of working as a freelance medical interpreter, has deepened my understanding of the operational and strategic challenges facing healthcare interpreting services, as well as the needs of interpreters on the front lines. Since 2022, I have served on the board of directors of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA), where I currently chair the Outreach Committee. I have also been a member of the NCIHC STC committee, where I participated in launching and recording the Interpreting for Healthcare podcast. I am also deeply committed to the education and professional development of interpreters. I have taught continuing education courses and introductory training programs for medical interpreters through various professional organizations across the United States, including ATA, CHIA, AALB and NOTIS. As the founder and author of medicalinterpreterblog.com, I create and share resources to support interpreters at every stage of their careers. This platform reflects my passion for continuous learning and my commitment to elevating the profession through accessible, practical, and relevant educational resources. My contributions to the interpreting profession have been recognized through awards, including Interpreter of the Year by the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) in 2021 and Trainer of the Year by Americans Against Language Barriers (AALB) in 2024. I am seeking this position with NCIHC to continue advocating for the vital role of interpreters in healthcare and to contribute my experience in training, management, and serving on the board of directors for a professional healthcare interpreting organization to the Council’s mission. I also relish the opportunity to work side by side with fellow language access advocates, who all are deeply committed to making a difference and are very generous with their time and knowledge, as has been my experience on the STC committee. Thank you for considering my candidacy. It would be an honor to serve on the NCIHC Board of Directors and work collaboratively to advance the interpreting profession in healthcare.
