 ANGELA RODRIGUEZ MOONEY Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors
As an educator, program coordinator, and advocate for multilingual communities, I am honored to be considered for a position on the Board of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). I bring to this role a combination of academic leadership, program development experience, and a deep commitment to advancing the visibility and professionalization of medical interpreting and translation within higher education.
I currently serve as the Spanish Program Coordinator and Faculty Advisor at Texas Woman's University (TWU), where I coordinate the Spanish Minor and its newly designed track in Translation and Interpreting. This track places a strong emphasis on medical interpreting and medical translation, preparing students, many of whom are heritage speakers, first-generation college students, and members of underrepresented communities, for careers in health care communication. As part of my work, I have been actively involved in the development of the university's proposal for a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Translation and Interpreting, contributing curricular design aligned with national standards and the needs of health professions.
My background in language education spans more than a decade and includes teaching at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This experience has centered my commitment to equitable access to linguistic services and to building pathways that empower students to enter the field of language work with confidence, ethical grounding, and professional preparation.
If elected to the NCIHC Board, I would bring a strong university-level perspective and a clear vision for creating sustainable bridges between academic programs and the health-care interpreting profession. I believe that the future of medical interpreting and translation depends on strengthening its presence in universities -- not only as a skill, but as a respected profession with rigorous training, ethical foundations, and national visibility. Higher education is a powerful space to cultivate a new generation of interpreters who are culturally responsive, well-trained, and ready to serve linguistically diverse communities.
My goals include:

Expanding partnerships between NCIHC and universities--especially HSIs, HBCUs, and public institutions--to promote medical interpreting as a prestigious and vital professional pathway.

Supporting curriculum development that foregrounds standards of practice, patient safety, equity, and advocacy.

Strengthening opportunities for students to engage with NCIHC initiatives, certification pathways, and professional development.

Contributing my experience with program coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-engaged education to support the Council's mission.
As a member of NCIHC, I deeply value the organization's commitment to justice, linguistic access, and professional integrity. Serving on the Board would allow me to contribute to this mission by amplifying the role of higher education as a partner in the advancement of medical interpreting and translation. I am committed to working collaboratively, listening openly, and advocating for initiatives that support interpreters, educators, and the communities we serve.
